On the 4th July, assistant veterinary surgeon, Jennifer Shutt began a 7 day trek to scale Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain in the world and highest point in Africa, raising money for Mesothelioma UK. Jennifer climbed with her sister, Cathy and has so far raised approximately £6000 for the charity that is close to their hearts. Jennifer’s Dad, Mike died from Mesothelioma, a cancer of the chest caused by inhalation of asbestos, in 2008. She reached the top at 8:00 am on Friday 9th July after 7 hours of gruelling climbing in darkness. She says: “the summit day was by far the most mentally challenging and physically exhausting thing we have ever undertaken but it was worth every bit of it when we stood at the top with our flag and took in the view. The summit, known as Uhuru Peak is 5895m and at this height your legs feel like they have lead weights attached!” “We have been blown away by the kindness of friends, family, staff and clients and we would like to say a huge thank you to you all.” They stayed at the top just long enough for a few pictures and then began their decent off the mountain |
